Haig takes Maori post

Thursday 24th April 2008

Former New Zealand Under-21 Assistant Coach Milton Haig has been appointed assistant coach of the New Zealand Maori team for 2008.

He succeeds Shane Howarth, who has stepped down from the role to focus on his Air New Zealand Cup commitments with Auckland.

Haig has been an NZRU resource coach and coached the Wanganui provincial side from 2003-2007, taking the team to the Air New Zealand NPC Division Three title in his first year.

Under his guidance, Wanganui has also made the Meads Cup final of the AA Rewards Heartland Championship in each of the last two years.

Haig was recently appointed assistant coach of Counties Manukau as well. He said his new position was a fantastic opportunity to be involved with one of world rugby's most recognised teams.

"The New Zealand Maori team is held in high regard at home and abroad. I am delighted to be part of the team and look forward to an exciting campaign," Haig said.

General Manager Professional Rugby Neil Sorensen thanked Howarth for his contribution to the New Zealand Maori team over the last two years.
